Painting What I Love

"Sonora Pass Study" 6x8 1st painting of the morning

I love painting so many different subjects- everything from architecture to animals to cityscapes to rural scenes- but my true love is pure landscape. Fast-moving, dramatic light on a vista with no human touches marring the view gets my heart beating faster and makes me just have to get out the paints. It seems like recently I've been painting everything but pure landscape, and I've not felt quite as excited about painting as I usually do. So last week, I decided to put everything else aside and head up to the Sierras to re-connect with my true passion. And the Sierras didn't let me down! I got up at 4, threw the dogs in the car and was at the top of Sonora Pass by 6:30. The sun hadn't quite made it over the rim of the mountains, so it was perfect timing: I had a chance to set up my gear and get all ready for sunrise. This time of year, dawn happens in a flash, and you'd better be ready to move fast. I started with a little 6x8 and had paint flying everywhere..as usual, I got too excited and started out too fast. The second painting, a 10x12, was a little more planned out and technically more successful. But there's something about the immediacy and energy of that first little study that I like - it's emotion on canvas rather than calculated painting. Every good painting should be a combination of both, and this trip to the high country reminded me of that.

Love the barn paintings in your recent newsletter, but I know what you mean about painting PURE landscapes...there is something so elemental/joyful about being out & painting in that kind of environment & what a rush! It does show in your work btw- always a pleasure to see what you've been working on!

Love your pure landcape paintings! They remind me of Rungius's work.
That 6x8 is a killer! I've been in the mountains at sunrise many times and your warm light against the cooler shaded areas look perfect.
I visit your site often for both inspiration and humility, you make it look easy.

Absolutley Gorgeous Kathleen! I feel like I am there in the cool morning air. Can't wait to learn all that I can from you this fall.

Thanks for all your comments, everyone! And Tony, you give high praise when you mention Rungius' name - he's near the top of my Favorite Artists Of All Time list! I had to laugh, though, when you said I make it look easy: yesterday I went back up into the high country and all I have to show for it is the paint stains on my sweatshirt that happened when the wind that was howling up the canyon blew my painting onto me! Oh well...you win some, you lose some. For every painting that I post online, there are many, many that end up like the one from yesterday...something to learn from but hopefully not repeat!
Looking forward to seeing Mary and Kathryn in the fall!

Really nice pieces. I love the quality of your paint strokes. Direct and decisive, just the way it is meant to be. Jill Carver suggested I look at your website and it was well worth the trip. I'll be back many times.

Kathleen,

I really enjoy your paintings. I have been visiting your website for a while now, but seeing these two landscapes really blew me away!...I thought I should leave a comment and say congratulations on the great work!

I like how you evaluated and thought through how you felt, packed up your gear and dogs headed for the hills, so being in a rut myself at this time, I have not tried this idea, but I do love plein air as well. I think getting back to the basics is excellent advice, and I can see why you enjoy doing pure landscape they are very beautiful paintings both of them.
